What is the AARST Foundation and who does it benefit?
What is AARST? What does it stand for?The AARST Foundation was created exclusively for charitable, religious, educational, and scientific purposes, including making of distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations to develop relationships with other foundations and organizations who will support radon research and radon social justice initiatives.
AARST Foundation has a separate governing board from the AARST organization, and intends to raise funding to assist with radon related research, standards development, and social justice efforts for radon risk reduction in low income housing areas.
AARST (American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists) is also a nonprofit, professional organization of members who are dedicated to the highest standard of excellence and ethical performance of radon measurement, radon mitigation and transfer of radon information for the benefit of members, consumers and the public at large. What is Radon?
Can radon be prevented?Radon is a naturally occurring odorless and colorless gas and is a Group A carcinogen. According to the US EPA it is estimated to cause 21,000 annual, lung cancer related deaths, and many of these are non-smoking or never smoking cases.
No, but it's presence in single family homes, multi-family dwellings, offices, schools and other public places can be "re-routed" (This is called Mitigated, and many place will have Radon Mitigation Systems installed) so that people are not exposed to these harmful gasses and keep their lungs healthy. How does someone know if they have radon in their home?
Homes can be tested for radon. In the US, the EPA has zone maps which show the average levels of radon in buildings specific to those regions. There are professionals all over the country (US and Canada) who are trained and certified to test homes. These tests will tell you the measurement of radon in the air you breath and where it falls in acceptable healthy levels. And with knowledge of safety in your home, you of course have the option to fix it.Are there laws about testing preventing or controlling radon in homes? Some homes are tested when they are bought or sold, is this a law?

home. Other states require the seller of a home to present the buyer with
information regarding radon and advising the buyer that they have the right
to test the home for elevated radon levels. Other states require radon

World wide studies show that radon is known to cause lung cancer in human
beings. This is a health risk that can be managed by conducting a simple
test and taking action to reduce elevated radon levels. Here are just a few studies made to date, but the reality is, more research will equal more definite findings strong enough to give definitive answers, by scientists and researchers around the world.

It is the goal of the AARST Foundation to help raise funds to support research and advocate for radon education in our country. Every donation the Foundation receives goes 100% to the goals listed in our Mission Statement, every donation made to the Foundation is tax deducible.
